ADDENDUM: I just have to share this comment that a reader left me, I am so grateful for it, she said it best: Jeanette said...Just wanted to add, after going back and looking at the photos you posted again, I love how the temple is a beacon of light, shining even brighter than the fire, letting us know where the real power lies. Not in devastation, but in hope and faith.
Wow!!! What a night! I live about 2 miles from the massive Herriman (machine gun fire) All night I watched out my window the devastation, it was quite frightening seeing the fire come so close to homes. My family and I said many many prayers last night that the homes would be spared, that the families would be comforted, and that the firefighters would be protected. Our prayers were not the only ones. Herriman is an extremely religious area, and I can only imagine the hundreds of thousands of prayers that were said last night. Our prayers were truly answered! Last night as I watched the fire raging, I thought that there were going to be at least 100 homes lost, if not more. This morning, they announced that only 4 homes (they are now saying 3 - one was on out building) were lost! I couldn't believe it! I watched a video taken this morning from a news chopper, and there were homes that were completely surrounded by burnt land, and the house was still standing. Many homes had flames that burnt up to 5 feet away and the home never burnt! They were saying that it was a miracle that more weren't lost, but I know it was a loving Heavenly Father who protected those homes and helped those firefighters do what they did to protect property. It is humbling to see how quickly a fire can roar down a mountain side. Some people were literally running away from the fire as it came towards their homes. I just had to say how grateful I am that our prayers were answered, and that everything looks like it will be okay. My heart and prayers go out to those who did loose so much, one family lost their home of 35 years, and left with only the shirts on their backs, they couldn't save anything because it came so fast. Thank you to the firefighters, police men, CERT volunteers, and National Guards men who are fighting this fire! And thanks to the families of these people who are serving us, I can't even imagine the fear they have felt over the past 18 hours.
Here are just a few photos of the fire. Just a little too close to home for comfort!

We are far enough away to be safe, but close enough that everything is covered in ash. It's a very humbling experience and really makes you think about what is important.
My thoughts and prayers are with those affected, those fighting the fire, and those serving the families who are displaced by this fire.
Just wanted to add, after going back and looking at the photos you posted again, I love how the temple is a beacon of light, shining even brighter than the fire, letting us know where the real power lies. Not in devestation, but in hope and faith.
That same picture caught my eye. It depicts so perfectly what is going on in the world today and how the Lord is our light and safe harbor.
I hadn't even heard about this fire, I'm so sorry for the tradgedy that has struck your community. But so so greatful that your prayers are being heard and so many have been protected. Prayers are powerful, ours will be with you and your community.
Wow! I just read an article about it. How scarry, and tragic for the families who lost their homes.
I just wanted to share that I live in Visalia CA, you probably have heard about the Bishop who was shot here 3 weeks ago. It devestated our community, but thousands of prayers said world wide have helped us see the tender mercies and love of our Father in Heaven. His plan is perfect and while we all still grieve for Sister Sannar and her boys the Lords comfort is sure. May your community experience the same healing together. -Taija
How frightening! So glad the damage was limited. Hopefully the community will help out those who lost their homes.
Since I'm in Logan, I haven't seen the fire. What amazing (and horrible) pictures. I have some great friends that live up in the mountains above Herriman and my heart stopped in the picture with that tall beam standing next to stairs. That is exactly like their house. I'm going to go call them now!
Humbling and frigthening post.
I've been on the phone with Kathy several times, some just leaving messages, but the whole city has been in our prayers.
I love the pics with the temple in them! So profound!
Glad all is well with your family too!
Glad your home and family was safe from the fire. Your post made me tear up, I love the Temple picture. So thankful for all the miracles Heavenly Father gives us everyday!!
I live in Herriman too and watched as the flames came down the mountain in our direction. Very frightening! But I must say your pictures turned out much better than mine!
The first time I saw this post, I had to skip over it. I've lost everything to house fires twice. The second one took my dad away from me in 1996. I nearly lost my sister to another single room fire. So frightening, powerful, and entrancing... My heart goes out to the victims! *many hugs!*
